Breeders Assistant can predict the genotypes and phenotypes that will arise from a given mating. It does this by simulating the underlying processes of Mendelian genetics. It takes the stated genotypes of the parents and predicts the likely distribution of genotypes and their corresponding probabilities that theoretically will result. It can also state the results in terms of phenotypes - i.e. traits expressed depending on the genotypes.
E.g. in Breeders Assistant for Cats this is used to model the inheritance that governs cat color genetics. Likewise Breeders Assistant for Dogs uses this to model canine coat color inheritance.
E.g. if you are a Burmese cat breeder with stud cats you might want to predict what colors you will get, and what colors will be carried, when you mate given cats together. You can then get Breeders Assistant to include text of the form 'Expected outcome: 25% sable carrying blue, 25% blue, ...' etc. in the trial pedigrees (and mating certificates*) you give to queen owners.
The same mechanism can of course be used for anything else for which genetic rules have been set up, e.g. congenital diseases.
In order to use these genetics modelling facilities you do need to know and understand the genetics behind your particular breed. However we supply genetic configurations with most versions of Breeders Assistant. Cat and dog breeders will be interested to know that we include configurations for most common breeds of cat and dog including both color genetics and coverage of many congenital diseases.
